Decode every status badge and color in the Cotonity UI — what each agent status means, how statuses transition, and what to do when an agent enters an unexpected state.
The six agent status types
Cotonity uses six distinct agent statuses, each shown as a colored badge in the Agents list and on the agent detail page. Active (green): the agent is running normally and accepting trigger events. Paused (yellow): the agent has been manually paused and is not processing new events. Draft (gray): the agent has been created but never published — it cannot be triggered by workflows or integrations. Error (red): the agent encountered a configuration or dependency problem that prevents it from running. Rate-Limited (orange): the agent has temporarily exceeded its model-tier request rate and runs are being throttled. Archived (light gray, strikethrough): the agent has been archived and is read-only.
Status transitions and triggers
Understanding how statuses change helps you diagnose issues faster. Draft transitions to Active when you click "Publish". Active transitions to Paused when you manually pause it. Active transitions to Error automatically if Cotonity detects a broken dependency — for example, a required integration token has expired, or a knowledge source URL is unreachable. Active transitions to Rate-Limited automatically when the agent's runs per minute exceed the model tier's rate limit; the agent returns to Active automatically once the rate window clears. Archived is a terminal state reachable only via the "Archive" menu option; archived agents must be duplicated to become active again.
Resolving the Error status
When an agent enters Error status, an explanatory banner appears at the top of its detail page describing the root cause. Common causes include: expired OAuth token for a connected integration (fix: reconnect the integration from the Integrations panel), deleted knowledge source file (fix: re-upload the file or remove the knowledge source from the agent), and invalid system prompt referencing a removed variable (fix: edit the prompt to remove the reference). After fixing the underlying issue, click "Retry" on the agent's detail page to re-validate the configuration. If validation passes, the agent returns to Active status automatically.
Bulk status actions
When managing many agents, the Agents list supports bulk status actions. Check the checkboxes next to multiple agents, then use the "Bulk Actions" dropdown at the top of the list to Pause All, Resume All, or Archive All selected agents. Bulk actions apply asynchronously — you see a progress toast notification and the statuses update within a few seconds. A bulk Resume only succeeds for agents in Paused status; agents in Error status are skipped and listed in a warning dialog so you can address them individually. Bulk Archive prompts a confirmation dialog listing all affected agents before proceeding.
